Kilifi leaders to hold demo if VC Mwatela is not reinstated

A section of Kilifi County leaders have today threatened to mobilize residents to hold street demonstrations if the Vice Chancellor Technical University of Mombasa, Josephat Mwatela, is not reinstated.

Led by Kilifi Governor, Amason Kingi, and Kaloleni MP, Gunga Mwinga, the leaders condemned the sacking of Professor Mwatela, terming the move as illegal.

Speaking to Citizen Digital at the Kilifi Governor’s office, the leaders said Education Cabinet Secretary, Fred Matiang’i overruled the University Council recommendation, which had written to the VC to warn him.

On his part, Matiang’I maintained that the decision to dismiss the VC was done after investigations which raised concern over his integrity, revealed abuse of office incidents, and mal-administration in his office.

Auditors from the National Treasury recommended disciplinary actions for Mwatela after their investigations confirmed that he was involved with nepotism and  irregular procurement of goods and services.

Mwatela was sacked on May 12, 2016 while serving a suspension.
