Leaders, voters decry anomalies as voter listing exercise closes

Nairobi Governor Evans Kidero has asked the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission to assure Kenyans that the individuals allegedly registered by National Youth Service (NYS) officers will not be listed as voters ahead of the August 8th General Election.

Speaking at the Calvary Covenant Centre in Komarock, Nairobi, Kidero said the NYS officers arrested with registration materials should be prosecuted and the names of those registered removed from the voters’ register.

In Taita Taveta County, residents mainly from Mwatate and Voi areas have expressed fear of being locked out of the August 8 elections, even as the extended voter registration period comes to a close on Sunday, February 19.

The residents lamented that their bid to register as voters for the first time were met with the system showing they were already listed, irregularities they say IEBC has failed to address.

“I went to register as a voter but when I arrived at the registration centre I was shocked to be informed that I am already registered. I don’t know when I was registered and by who,” complained one of the residents who had turned up to enlist as a voter.

Low turnout numbers were witnessed during the last day of voters’ registration countrywide.

The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission had planned to conclude the voter registration exercise on February 14th but the court added three days arguing that some Kenyans would be denied their suffrage right.

IEBC has categorically indicated that the there will no chance of continuing to register voters, as the commission is already behind schedule in its elections preparations.
