Learned friends defend Tobiko against MPs attacks

The Law Society of Kenya has warned political leaders against attacking Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) Keriako Tobiko over his recent actions on high profile graft cases.

LSK CEO Apollo Mboya and Kituo Cha Sheria Executive Director Gertrude Angote have cautioned politicians against interfering with constitutional offices.

In a statement, Mboya and Angote have termed the attacks as unnecessary, unmerited and malicious and have potential of interfering with the independence of DPP’s office.

They instead want political leaders to strengthen the institution as it restructures to improve quality of prosecutions and the capacity of prosecutors in the country.

This comes as a section of Jubilee MPs have been allegedly plotting to kick Tobiko out of office, accusing him of mishandling corruption cases hence slowing the president’s fight against corruption.

However, some Jubilee MPs have defended Tobiko against an alleged plot to oust him over the manner he has handled corruption cases referred to him by the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC).

The Constitution provides the DPP can only be removed from office through the recommendation of a tribunal appointed on the advice of the Public Service Commission.
