Learning disrupted at Riruta Primary School after fire destroyed 7 classrooms

Learning has been paralyzed at Riruta Primary School in Dagoretti after fire broke out on Sunday evening.

Seven classrooms, desks and pupils’ books were destroyed following the fire incident that took several hours to be put out.

“Moto ilitokea jana kutokana na hitilafu ya stima na madarasa saba ikachomeka lakini hakuna mtu yeyote aliyeumia. Watu waliwezakusaidiana, moto ikazimwa na watu wa fire wakakuja wakazima pia na watu wa stima wakaja wakazima stima pia. Leo asubuhi vile tumeamka kazi imekuwa kupatia watoto counselling kidogo na kuwaambia kila kitu kiko sawa,” said the school headteacher Agnes Muchiri.

According to her, all the 2,000 pupils are safe but the school has been forced to squeeze them in other classrooms that were not affected.

She said about 300 desks were destroyed in the inferno so the pupils are now sharing desks until they find an alternative solution.

Mrs. Muchiri urged the county government to intervene and assist them in getting other desks and re-constructing the razed classrooms.

Riruta residents however lamented that fire engines from the Nairobi County  Government took too long to arrive at the scene.

According to them, when the trucks eventually arrived, the rescue team was unable to put out the fire in good time because their equipment was allegedly in a dilapidated state.

Riruta community chairperson David Mukunjura urged the county government to ensure that fire engine services are adequate so that Kenyans in distress get assistance in good time.
