Learning in north eastern region paralyzed

Learning of more than 350,000 students in primary and secondary schools in the north eastern region now hangs in the balance after teachers refused to report back to class.

Mandera County’s Kenya Primary School Head teachers Association Chairman Mohammed Noor said that 75 per cent of non-local teachers posted to 145 schools have declined to report to school.

Hundreds of teachers posted in Garissa, Mandera and Wajir declined to go back over insecurity concerns after dozens of people, mainly non-locals, were killed by Al-Shabaab militants in the recent past.

While addressing a press conference in Mombasa, head teachers from north eastern region said the issue is getting out of hand and urged the government to intervene to safeguard education sector in the region.
