Lecturers call off strike, sign return to work deal

Lecturers have on Saturday 9th December called off their 38-day strike after signing a return-to-work deal with the Universities Council following a consultative meeting with the Inter Public Universities Councils Consultative Forum (IPUCCF).

In a joint statement sent to newsrooms, IPUCCF and the University’s Academic Staff Union (UASU) said that the also agreed that the 2017-2021 CBA negotiations will start on the 18th of this month until the 31st of January next year.

According to UASU Secretary General Constantine Wasonga, the meeting also resolved that the Vice Chancellors’ Committee takes up the outstanding pension issue for the 2010-2013 and the 2013-2017 CBAs, amounting to 1.56 billion and 2 billion shillings respectively, with the Education Ministry and Treasury.

The meeting also agreed that the VCs’ Committee undertakes to sensitize all universities at the beginning of next year, to ensure all universities negotiate and complete their internal 2010-2013 and 2013-2017 CBAs before the 28th of February next year.
