Lecturers to down tools Saturday over pay deal

Lecturers in all public universities will down their tools Saturday, July 1, 2017 morning if the government fails to implement their 2013-2017 Collective Bargaining Agreement that was signed in March after a two-month strike.

The Universities Academic Staff Union (UASU) Secretary General, Constantine Wasonga, says they have given the government up to midnight Friday, June 30 to implement the CBA deal that will cost the government Ksh 10 billion.

Speaking during a media conference in Nairobi, Wasonga called on National Treasury Cabinet Secretary, Henry Rotich, and his education counterpart, Dr. Fred Matiang’i, to ensure the CBA is implemented to avert the public lecturers’ strike.

Wasonga has accused the government and the public university councils of failing to implement the CBA which is fully recognized by the Employment and Labour Relations Court.
