Lempurkel charged with incitement to violence

Laikipia North Member of Parliament Matthew Lempurkel was this morning charged at a Nanyuki court with incitement to violence and offensive conduct.

Mr Lempurkel appeared before Chief Magistrate Lucy Mutai where he denied the charges and was released on a bond of Ksh500,000 or a cash bail of Ksh300,000.

The MP was charged that on July 31 this year at Rumuruti Police Station in Laikipia West sub-County, he threatened Police Constable Nicholas Kipruto, who was manning the report office, that he would set the police station on fire if a man identified as Dominic Lenyamire was not released.

He was also charged with the intent to commit a breach of peace.

The court heard that the MP’s words indicated that the police station was in danger of being set ablaze, an act that could have led to the destruction of the property of the Government of Kenya.

The case will be mentioned on December 8, 2016 and heard on February 9, 2017.

This comes just one day after the legislator was charged at the Milimani Law Courts in Nairobi with assaulting nominated MP Sarah Korere and released on a Ksh100,000 cash bail or a bond of Ksh200,000 with a surety of a similar amount. The case will be mentioned on December 5, 2016.
