Licenses of 50 bars revoked in Muranga

Licenses of 50 bars in Murang’a County were revoked on Tuesday after they were found culpable of flouting county liquor laws and regulations.

Speaking during a meeting with bar owners, Murang’a East Deputy County Commissioner Kepha Marube said the bars were ordered closed after they were found operating outside stipulated hours with some opening as early as 8am.

The police boss also said the authorities had received numerous complaints from members of the public over the state of sanitation in the pubs.

“The closed bars will not be opened until an inspection is done and are found to have met the required standards required to warrant issuance of a license,” explained the county commissioner.

He further warned that bar owners who allow bhang peddlers in their bars will also be prosecuted.

The crackdown came barely four days after Governor Mwangi wa Iria accused county security officials of relenting in the war against alcoholism.

“The county security team is doing little to crackdown on the sale of illicit brew and bar owners who operate outside stipulated hours,” said Mr. wa Iria at the time.
