Lightening strikes endanger residents, livestock

Residents of Lelan, Pokot Sub-County are appealing for help after recent spates of lightning strikes that have killed residents and livestock.

The residents, who live in the lightning hot spot, allege that over the past ten years over one thousand heads of cattle have been killed by lightning with over ten thousand dairy cows now in danger of being wiped out.

This comes days after one dairy farmer from Chorok Village lost four dairy cows worth Sh500,000 to lightning.

One resident, Emanuel Losiangole, expressed worry over says the current occurrence of lightening in the area during rainy season because of the danger it poses to their livestock and families.

Losiangole added that the strikes are interfering with their normal way of life and called for preventive measures, such as lightning arrestors, to be quickly effected by the county and national governments in order to protect them.

West Pokot is a region that experiences high amounts of rainfall throughout the year due to its high altitude.
