Liquor makers sue govt over property destruction

Officials of the Association of Spirits Manufacturers have moved to the court seeking to prevent intrusion into their business premises.

Through advocate Kabugu Muguk, the association is alleging that their properties are being destroyed and looted in the pretext of fight against illicit brew.

The association stated that members of the public have resorted to vandalism and looting during the on-going campaign against second generation brews and illicit liquor.

The association has sued Inspector General of Police, Attorney General, Interior CS and National Coordination and Kabete MP Ferdinand Waititu over the losses incurred.

The matter has been certified as urgent before Justice Isaac Lenaola who has directed that the case papers be served to the respondents pending hearing of the matter on Tuesday.

The operation against illicit brew was launched last week after President Kenyatta issued a ban on second generation drinks and ordered legislators to lead a campaign to rid illicit drinks from their areas.

Crackdown continues

Meanwhile, the crackdown on illicit brew entered the 4th day Monday with thousands of litres of alcohol destroyed.

In Nyahururu, the operation, led by Laikipia West MP Timothy Nduhiu went on throughout the night and saw 15,000 cartons of liquor from several depots destroyed.

In Kiharu, the crackdown extended to the forests where brew had been hidden.

The operation, led by Kiharu MP Irungu Kangata, saw several litres of chang’aa poured.
