Literacy report raises questions on countrys education system

A report released by Uwezo Kenya has raised questions on the effectiveness of the country’s education system.

The report indicates that none of the 46 counties where research was carried out has passed the 60 per cent mark in class three pupil’s ability to correctly tackle class two assignments.

Education, in the arid and semi-arid areas, comes into sharp focus with the findings indicating that only 10 per cent of Class three students can handle class two tasks.

Nyeri, Kajiado and Nairobi counties top the list of proper academic progression at 58 per cent, 54 and 52 per cent respectively.

Turkana, Samburu and Mandera the lie bottom of the list at 14 per cent, 13 and 10 per cent respectively.

Teacher absenteeism from school has significantly reduced between 2011 and 2013 from 16 per cent to 12 per cent nationally, according to the findings, though the numbers vary between counties.

Kisii was ranked the best performing county for the number of young children in pre-school with 8 out of 10 children aged 3 to 5 in pre-school.

Nyeri County led in parent participation in school matters with 8 out of 10 parents attending school meetings.

Isiolo was also ranked as the county in which the highest number of the schools provided training for teachers who teach students with special needs, though this was generally low at 19 per cent.

The county is also tops in providing school girls with sanitary towels, standing at 95 per cent.

The report also revealed that girls attend school more regularly than boys, especially in upper primary, with the cumulative attendance being 91 per cent. Teachers’ daily attendance is 88 per cent.

It further revealed that the number of five year olds attending primary school prematurely  stands close to 14 per cent, most or who are in public schools.

In what may seem as a rather confusing finding, the report revealed that two out of ten children (21 per cent) who are currently enrolled in primary school have never attended pre-school, raising questions on the admission regulations in schools.

The report was released ahead of the International Literacy Day celebrated on Tuesday.
