LIVE BLOG: Uhuru launches Madaraka Express commuter train

President Uhuru Kenyatta has on Wednesday officially inaugurated Kenya’s largest infrastructure project, the Sh372 billion standard gauge railway line at Miritini in Mombasa County.

The Head of State warned vandals that they would face the hangman’s noose if they are found guilty of destroying infrastructure projects. On Tuesday, three suspects were charged after they were arrested in Voi with steel bars and nuts.

Part of the Mombasa-Nairobi railway line was vandalized in scenes reminiscent of destruction of Kenya’s biggest superhighway immediately after its launch when thieves plucked side rails on the Thika-Nairobi superhighway and only took extra vigilance by the Kenya National Highway Authority to end carnage.

President Kenyatta hailed the new standard gauge railway line as a historic achievement dubbing it the Madaraka Express as opposed to the colonial Kenya-Uganda railway which was colloquially referred to as the Lunatic Express or Lunatic Line.
