Lobby group in bid to empower Siaya women

The Maendeleo Ya Wanawake lobby group has embarked on a programme of establishing Savings and Credit Co-operative Societies (Saccos) for women in Siaya County, with a view to improve their socio-economic standards.

According to the organization’s Siaya County branch chairperson, Patricia Apoli, they are currently organizing women groups into Saccos through which they can save and borrow loans to improve their livelihoods.

The chairperson said that the organization through her office, intends to bring together Maendeleo Ya Wanawake organization women groups in all the six sub-counties within Siaya County and assist them to form Saccos in their respective sub-counties.

Ms Apoli, who was speaking at Uranga chief’s camp in Alego/Usonga sub-county during the establishment of Maendeleo Ya Wanawake Uranga Division Sacco on Monday, September 26, encouraged the women to ensure they venture into some income generating activities to reduce over-dependence on their husbands.

She advised that they can start up some small and micro-entrepreneurship that can make them self independent, adding that they should also open up bank accounts so as to be able to save effectively.
