LSK calls for formation of court to deal with crimes against humanity

Law society of Kenya President Isaac Okero is urging for the formation of an Independent High Court Division to deal exclusively with cases of crimes against humanity.

Okero argued that the court would protect Kenyans from political violence and deliver substantial justice and truth ahead of next year’s General Election.

The LSK president further said that those who are accused of tampering with ICC witnesses should be prosecuted.

This comes barely a week after the International Criminal Court terminated the cases facing Deputy President William Ruto and his co-accused Joshua Arap Sang citing political interference and witness tampering.

Ruto and Sang were accused of crimes against humanity including murder, deportation or forcible transfer of populations and persecution, allegedly committed during the 2007-2008 post-election violence.

The decision was welcomed by most leaders across the political divide and some Kenyans, who took to the streets to celebrate and called on everyone to open a new chapter in order for the country to move forward.

The victims’ lawyer Wilfred Nderitu on the other hand expressed optimism that ICC prosecutor Fatou Bensouda would appeal the ruling in the no case to answer motion.
