LSK wants flights from China to Kenya suspended over coronavirus

The Law Society of Kenya has moved to court seeking orders to suspend the decision by government to allow flights from China to Kenya despite the coronavirus outbreak.

According to the LSK, the world is in a global health crisis because of the outbreak of the virus.

“Pending the hearing and determination of the application a conservatory order be issued suspending the respondent’s decision to allow the China Southern Co. Airlines Ltd resumption of non-essential flights from China to Kenya,” reads the papers.

Countries across the world have imposed restriction on flights to and from China in order to contain the virus.

Those named in the petition include CS for Health Sicily Kariuki, China Southern Co. Airline LTD and Kenya Airports Authority among others.

The lawyers body further wants CS Kariuki to prepare and present a contingency plan to the court on prevention, surveillance, control and response systems to coronavirus in the country.

LSK argues that the Health CS has failed to disseminate information on risks, protection measure, signs and symptoms and even responses.

The lawyer’s body further faults health facilities for not making public cases of infections, if any, adding that there is no hotline for the public to seek or supply information to the government on the virus.

“The petitioner believes that that respondents actions threatens the right to health and life and that a conservatory order us necessary to preserve life, health,” argues the LSK.
