LSK to hold AGM after previous meeting aborted due to chaos

The Law Society of Kenya has reconvened its annual general meeting this Saturday at the Bomas of Kenya after the original meeting aborted in March over wrangles.

The meeting held in March by LSK adjourned after chaotic incidents over a dispute on the planned construction of the controversial international arbitration and convention centre at a cost of Ksh 1.2 billion in Nairobi’s South C Estate.

A group of Lawyers dubbed Okoa LSK was blamed for the chaos after they opposed the project, which is yet to start.

On Monday, the High Court dismissed an application by a group of Muslim lawyers who wanted to stop the project on grounds that the LSK center would contain a bar that serves alcoholic drinks which is a violation of their religion.

The Annual Conference will this year be held from 12th – 16th August, 2015 at the Leisure Lodge Beach & Golf Resort in Mombasa.

The conference will be held under the theme: “Insecurity and the Rule of Law”.

OKOA-LSK spokesperson, Edwin Sifuna, said that the members had resolved to abandon the International Arbitration Centre project, which was one of the things that brought conflict in the last AGM.

He noted that the members want an independent auditor identified through a transparent procurement process to audit the finances and affairs of the society for the period starting January 2010 to December 2014.

The group also wants the secretary/chief executive officer sent on compulsory leave pending the audit

The Law Society of Kenya (LSK) had last month disowned the signature collection by its Mombasa branch seeking the removal of Chief Justice Dr Willy Mutunga from office over allegations of marginalising the coastal region.

LSK chair Erick Mutua said they will not allow anybody to destabilise the meeting for it will affect LSK set mandatory operations that are yet to be achieved.
