Machakos County askaris allegedly demolish Sonkos home signpost

Machakos Governor Dr. Alfred Mutua is alleged to have on Wednesday night sent county askaris to bring down the Sonko family farm homes signboard that was erected along Mombasa Road.

According to area residents, the askaris, who were driving a Machakos County Government vehicle, brought down the signboard following a reported disagreement the governor and the flamboyant Nairobi Senator.

Hinting at political power play, the residents claim that Sonko often visits his home, inviting both the Nairobi and Machackos MCAs for meetings – gatherings whose agenda remains unknown.

They went on to express dissatisfaction with the removal of the signpost, saying that Senator has made major contributions to development in the area, citing two boreholes which have made access to water easier and free.

A senior teacher in the area, who sought anonymity, said that Sonko did free wiring and electricity installation and connection to the people in Mua who could not afford to meet the cost of connection and installation to their houses – something they say Mutua is not happy about at all.

Efforts to reach Governor Mutua for comment were futile.
