Machakos County scraps off filming levies

Filmmakers across the country will now have zero charges while shooting and producing their films in Machakos County after the county government scrapped off the levies.

“There are no charges to shoot any film in Machakos County, you can come, and produce your film,” said the governor.

The levies, which are usually between Ksh10,000 and Ksh80,000 on average for using a site in any county, will see the cost of producing movies in the county reduce.

“It will cost Ksh25,000 for one to shoot a movie in Kilifi County, while to a foreigner it would be Ksh80 000,” said Andy Ruri, a film scholar.

According to Ruri, the directive by the Machakos County Government would be favourable to the film industry whose fortunes have been dwindling in recent times.

“It is an industry faced by many challenges, because it lacks investors. What Machakos County has done should be adopted in every county,” said Ruri.
