Machakos MCAs pass People’s assembly motion
The Machakos County Assembly on Wednesday passed the controversial People’s Assembly motion.
The motion was sponsored by majority leader Francis Ngunga but fiercely opposed by the minority led by Tala ward representative Alex Kamitu.
“This House resolves that its membership will participate in proceedings of the People’s Assembly and will constitute a special college for appointment or election of members, delegation and observance of the People’s Assembly,” said Ngunga.
However, the minority party MCAs walked out in protest citing “bias” by the house leadership.
The Assembly, which is dominated by Wiper Party MCAs, an opposition affiliate, passed the motion after weeks of legal consultation after the Kitui High Court on November 21 issued orders barring county assemblies from passing or implementing the motions.
“Whether the court order bars the County Assembly from debating the motion, the answer is that by reading of the order, it does not bar the Assembly as per say from debating and subsequent passing the motion,” said Speaker Florence Mwangangi amidst cheers from the members.
The Assembly becomes the 12th to adopt the motion after the Mombasa County Assembly passed it on Wednesday December 6.
