Machakos Peoples Park director quits

The director of Machakos Peoples Park, Mesh Musyoki, on Monday resigned from his post citing lack of budgetary support by the county leadership.

In a letter addressed to Machakos Governor Alfred Mutua, Mr Musyoki claimed the park had accumulated debts with no clear payment plans or intentions by the county government to honour its obligations.

Mr Musyoki said he was forced to run the park using personal funds, subjecting him to financial turmoil through unnecessary debt.

Further, he accused the county of financial mismanagement and misinformation regarding the running of the public park.

“I find it imprudent and highly regrettable that I have,  by effect of decision taken in official capacity, participated in the impoverishment of various people who invested in legitimate supply opportunities for commercial value,” read part of the letter.

He added that: “It is a heavy tag that I may never be able to adequately shed off, the fact that people’s livelihoods have been shattered as a direct result of the County governments commitments to them on genuine commercial contracts in which I played an active role is in itself morally  disturbing.’’

Mr Musyoki said in the letter that he hopes that the county would be addressed soon for the sake of development.

Machakos Peoples Park was officially opened on February 2014 by Governor Mutua to much fanfare and has hosted several events attracting revelers from neighbouring counties including Nairobi, Kiambu and Kajiado.
