Magoha orders all schools that pose danger to pupils closed

Education CS George Magoha has ordered all schools that are unsafe for learners be closed.

Speaking after he directed the closure of primary school in Kibra, the CS said affected pupils will be transferred to other learning institutions.

“… From now on, any school that looks like what I have shut down should be closed. Nobody should wait for us to shut them down, we have officers on the ground. But in the process to be humane, that even as we shut them down, can we ensure that there are schools where the minors can be relocated to,” said Magoha.

According to the CS, St. Catherine Bombolulu Primary School in Kibra was not approved.

The two-story structure had been built using corrugated iron sheets and had 207 pupils.

The Education CS said they are to be moved to Ayany Estate Primary located in the same area.

He however assured parents that the closure of schools and transfers would be done in a humane manner to ensure that the learners are not affected.

” The community must understand that we are acting in the best interest of the children,” said Magoha.

He revealed that an audit of schools across the country is underway to ensure that all buildings are safe for learners.

When asked where the money for the audit would come from, CS Magoha said: “When it comes to getting funds to ensure that our children don’t die like chicken the way they did, mine will be made available.”

Prof. Magoha further noted that he has taken personal responsibility following the tragedy at Precious Talents School on Monday.

8 pupils were killed and over 50 other injured after their classroom collapsed on them.

The CS said once the report on Precious Talent school is availed on Thursday, the ministry will announce the way forward.

The proprietor of the school has since blamed Nairobi City County officials for allegedly digging a sewer line behind the ill-fated building.

According to him, this is what caused the building to collapse.
