Main suspect in school arson surrenders in Nakuru

Police in Nakuru County are holding a man suspected to be behind the burning of St Joseph Kirandich Secondary School in Keringet, Kuresoi South.

Ronald Kerich, who is a graduate of Egerton University, surrendered to Chebaraa Location Chief Christine Chumo and was held for questioning together with a middle-aged woman.

This came two days after area Member of Parliament (MP) Zakayo Cheruiyot warned the suspects behind the fire to surrender or face dire consequences from locals.

Speaking to Citizen Digital, Chief Chumo said the two are assisting the police with investigations, adding that Kerich, who is a resident of Karandit Village in Tinet Ward, admitted to going to the school but only after the dormitory had caught fire.

Police had earlier on interrogated teachers and other staff who accused Kerich of being the mastermind of the incident.

At the same time, a Kiswahili teacher at the school, Richard Kemoi, and student Oscar Kiplangat were arraigned in a Molo court and charged with setting the school on fire and incitement.

Both were released on Ksh.500,000 bond and surety of same amount, and Ksh.10,000 respectively.

The case will come up for hearing on September 23, 2016
