Maina Kamanda asks Nairobi MCAs to impeach Sonko
Nominated MP Maina Kamanda has asked Nairobi Members of the County Assembly (MCAs) to follow Kiambu County’s example and impeach Governor Mike Sonko.
He alluded to the Wednesday impeachment of Ferdinard Waititu who was facing Gross Violation of the Constitution & Public Finance Management Act, Crimes Under the National Law and Gross Misconduct/Abuse of Office charges.
“Tunawaambia MCAs wa Nairobi waangalie vile MCAs wa Kiambu wamefanya…Waondoe huyo mwizi aende Nyumbani, waondoe huyo mwizi aende nyumbani ama arudi Shimo la tewa,( We are asking Nairobi MCAs to follow Kiambu county’s example, send the thief home or to Shimo La Tewa ),” Kamanda said.
He was making a veiled reference to Governor Sonko who is accused of escaping from Shimo la Tewa Prison before serving his jailterm in full.
He also alluded to Sonko’s ongoing graft cases in which the embattled governor is accused of economic crimes amounting to Ksh.357 million.
At the same time, he faulted party leaders for handing party tickets to candidates with contentious credentials.
“We want to ask party leaders to deny thieves party tickets even if those people seeking elective positions have money,” he said.
Kamanda was speaking in Kiambu during the swearing in of James Nyoro as governor.
Nyoro who was once a Senior Advisor to the Presidency in matters Food Security, Water and Climate Change replaces Governor Waititu who was impeached on Wednesday.
While opinions are rife that Waititu’s tribulations are politically instigated, the governor landed squarely on the chopping board after he was charged over a Ksh.580 million irregular tender in July 2019.
Waititu was charged with corruption related charges alongside his wife Susan Wangari Ndung’u and eight others among them county employees.
He denied the charges and was released on a cash bail of Ksh.15 million, with the court further barring him from accessing his office.
The court ruling locking the Governor out of office escalated the supremacy battle between Waititu and his deputy Dr. James Nyoro, who immediately assumed the Governor’s office insisting he was in control.
