Major roads to be closed during President Obamas visit

Five major roads will be temporarily closed between Friday and Sunday during U.S. President Barack Obama’s visit.

Mombasa Road, from the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA), Uhuru Highway, Waiyaki Way, Limuru Road and the Thika Superhighway will be the major roads affected.

According to Nairobi Traffic Police Commandant Edward Mwamburi, Mombasa Road, Uhuru Highway and Limuru Road will be closed on Friday starting 2PM to late night.

Friday is the arrival day for President Obama.

On Saturday, Limuru Road and the larger Waiyaki Way will remain closed for the better part of the day when the U.S. President will be expected at the United Nations Complex for the Sixth Global Entrepreneurship Summit.

On Sunday, Limuru Road and the Thika Superhighway will remain closed from morning hours when the U.S. President addresses the nation at the Safaricom Indoor Arena in Kasarani before visiting Kenyatta University.

Uhuru Highway and Mombasa Road will also be closed for several hours on Sunday when Obama is expected to jet out of the country for Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

Feeder roads will feel the effect of the traffic spill-over from these main city roads.

In addition to this, Nairobi County police boss Benson Kibue says 10,000 police officers have been deployed to ensure security and law and order during Obama’s visit.

The police officers have been outsourced from the neighbouring counties to assist those based in Nairobi.

The officers will be deployed to various venues where the President will be and will work closely with the Secret Service in securing the world’s most powerful man.

Kibue has urged Kenyans to fully cooperate with security officials at all times and keep off events where they are not invited.

Kenya and United States have enjoyed a long history of traditionally strong friendship and partnership.

Obama is expected in the country this week for the Global Entrepreneurship Summit slated for July 24th to 26th, 2015.
