Makongeni Traders Protest Over Closed Market

The traders say they met Kiambu County officials on Thursday and agreed to pay new rates but woke up to find the market closed with armed officers manning gates.

The traders say most of the food items they had planned to sell will expire if they are not allowed to conduct their businesses.

Taxes for the traders operating at Makongeni market have been increased from 20 to 30 shillings on market days and 20 shilings on normal days.
