Makueni County bans Miraa hang-outs, market days over the coronavirus

Makueni County Governor Kivutha Kibwana through the Makueni county emergency response committee has announced a raft of new measures to curb the spread of coronavirus in the county.

Following the meeting,  the committee has banned all the market days in the county, saying it’s the main way in which the virus could be spread.

“There are market days that run from Sunday to Sunday and since many people meet here, we are suspending such even if there will be a drop in economic growth. This is good for the health of our people,” said Kibwana

The county has also recommended a review on the times that bars and recreational spots conduct business.

Only licensed bars will be allowed to conduct business and will be required to operate strictly between 5PM to 11PM.

“There is an immediate suspension of night club operation hours; all liquor licensed outlets to operate 5 pm-11 pm including weekends. This includes only licensed clubs,” he added

The same ban has been extended to joints in Kitui town where locals chew Miraa with the governor saying all social gatherings have been banned.

“All social gatherings such as sporting, leisure, Muguka and Miraa chewing joints are suspended with immediate effect, “he said

At the same time, the county has asked Matatu stakeholders to be extra vigilant and provide hand sanitizers to passengers.

Touting at bus stops has also been banned.

All the entrances of supermarkets, retail shops and hotels have been instructed to have alcohol-based hand sanitizers or adequate soap and water.

Burials or any family gatherings will now be conducted by close relatives to minimize contact between people.

Makueni county has set aside 53 isolation beds across the health facilities in the event of a coronavirus outbreak in the region.

Patients, if any, will only be visited by one known close relative who will be identified by the facility during admission period.

The county assembly has also reduced the number of sittings in a week.

At the same time County Assembly speaker Doughlas Mbilu announced that members of the public will not be allowed at the assembly’s gallery while the ban is active.
