Makueni Governor Kivutha Kibwana booed at home

Makueni Governor Prof Kivutha Kibwana was on Saturday forced to cut short his speech to his constituents after locals demanded he ditches his Muungano Party in favour of the Wiper Party.

Kibwana, who had accompanied Wiper Party Leader Kalonzo Musyoka on a voter registration campaign drive, had earlier been asked to switch allegiance for the unity of the Kamba nation, a scenario that could shape Ukambani politics ahead of the General Election.

For the past four years, Kibwana has steered his leadership and politics from the behest of his Muungano Party, despite the political dominance of the Wiper Party in the region.

He has often pledged his backing for Wiper Leader Kalonzo Musyoka who is eyeing the presidency in this year’s General Election, and so for Kibwana, he was in good company drumming up support for the ongoing mass voter registration until the tide took a different direction.

Kibwana was displeased by a call by the Wiper leader to fold up his Muungano Party and didn’t hesitate to respond saying he has been an ardent supporter of Musyoka, better than certain politicians within wiper.

But the audience would hear none of it, reacting in the best way they know. By booing him.

The incident comes at a time Musyoka is facing resistance from within the party, with a section of party leaders accusing him of backing incumbent governors from Ukambani.

Party Chairman David Musila and Machakos Senator Johnson Muthama have in the past skipped party functions to register their displeasure.

Late last year Musyoka broke ranks with Machakos Governor Dr Alfred Mutua who was expelled from the Wiper Party for defiance.

Mutua intends to defend his seat on his Maendeleo Mashinani political formation.
