Anti-malaria drug withdrawn from Kenyan market

Anti-malaria drug withdrawn from Kenyan market

A drug used to treat malaria has been recalled from the Kenyan market after it failed its quality test, the Pharmacy and Poisons Board has said.

The move to have Duo-Cotecxin withdrawn is due to safety concerns and we will no longer allow its importation into the country, an official from the Board told reporters in Kisumu on Thursday.

The drug will no longer be stocked in pharmacies because of its substandard quality,  Ms. Jacinter Wasike, Director of Inspection, Surveillance and Enforcement said.

The Board also announced the shutdown of over 70 unregistered chemists in an ongoing crackdown in Kisumu and parts of Western Kenya.

“They were either operating without a licence, or had quacks posing as pharmacists,” she said, adding that individuals implicated would be arrested and prosecuted.

The crackdown is expected to continue in different parts of the country to ensure safety of Kenyans with Ms. Wasike urging members of the public to be cautious when buying medicine.
