Malawian Minister Commits Suicide

Kamanya is reported to have allegedly shot himself in his home.

Kamanya’s spokesman has however denied the reports that the suicide was prompted by the loss of his parliamentary seat in the ongoing elections since the official results have not yet been declared in what was expected to be a tight presidential race.

The Malawi Election Commission (MEC) Chair Maxon Mbendera says that they will announce results when 30% of votes have been counted.

Voting spilled into a second day at 13 voting stations as thousands queued to cast their ballot.

In some places, voting boxes or lids did not arrive so officials used buckets and plastic wrap.

In their preliminary assessment of the election, Commonwealth observers said it had been "peaceful, orderly and transparent", although there had been "serious shortcomings" in the distribution of election material and "isolated incidents of violence" because of the delays.

Around 7.5 million people were eligible to vote in the fifth elections since the end of one-party rule 20 years ago.

Eleven candidates ran against Joyce Banda, but her main challenger is seen as Peter Mutharika, the brother of former President Bingu wa Mutharika.
