Male convict who tested positive for COVID-19 dies at a police cell in Migori

A 32-year-old male convict who recently tested positive for COVID-19 died at a police cell in Kuria West, Migori County, on Monday.

A report from the police seen by Citizen Digital indicates that the convict, identified as Samwel Marwa who was sentenced on April 1, 2021, tested positive for the disease and has been under the care of medical officers.

Kuria West sub-county Police Commander Cleti Kimaiyo said the convict could not be taken to serve his sentence at the Migori GK Prison because of his COVID-19 status hence was isolated in a police cell.

Mr. Kimaiyo said the convict was stable in the police cells until Sunday at around 2.22pm when he collapsed in the cell and became unconscious, further that blood-stained foam came from his mouth prompting them to alert the medical officers.

He said the convict was handled by the medical officers who later left him to rest in the cell after his condition slightly stabilized.

However, on Monday morning at around 7am, the medical officer who had gone to do the regular checkup found him dead in the cell.

The police boss said they are still waiting for a further medical report to establish the exact cause of death.

The family has since been informed about his death and is now working on plans to move the body to Migori Level Four Hospital mortuary.

Mr. Kimaiyo said they are also going to liaise with officers from the department of health to fumigate the cell.

The deceased had been jailed for six months or an alternative fine of Ksh.10,000 after he was found guilty of being in possession of illicit brew in Kuria West.
