Maliera Boys closed as students demand new bus

Maliera Boys Secondary School in Gem, Siaya County is the latest institution to be closed after students attempted to torch the school library on Wednesday night.

According to the school Principal, Mr. Samuel Oyondi, the school was closed after a decision by the Board of Management and county education management team.

He revealed that the students attempted to set the school library on fire but the situation was controlled by police officers who rushed on scene.

Speaking to Radio Ramogi on phone, Mr. Oyondi stated that, upon interrogation, the students raised demands such as a new school bus and entertainment sessions every weekend.

He added that the students also claimed they wanted to go back home and meet their counterparts from other schools including Ng’iya Girls and Maranda High School which were recently closed indefinitely over student unrest.

According to Mr. Oyondi, students were sent home until Tuesday next week when they are expected to start reporting back.

Maliera Boys High school is the third school to be closed in Siaya County this week.

Ng’iya Girls’ High school was closed on Monday while Maranda High School was closed on Wednesday.
