Malindi MP Aisha Jumwa apologises over offensive remarks

Malindi Member of Parliament Aisha Jumwa has apologised to all those offended by her alleged reckless remarks during the recently concluded Msambweni by-election campaigns.

The legislator, who appeared before the National Cohesion and Integration Commission (NCIC) on Tuesday, said she regrets that her remarks were offensive but maintains she was provoked by ODM Secretary General Edwin Sifuna.

“Nimekubali msamaha wake na wale walikuwa offended na matamshi yangu…Mimi sioni kama yalikuwa yanagusa mtu yeyote, ni maneno ambayo yalikuwa yananigiusa mimi mwenyewe,” she said.

“Sikutaja kabila, sikutaja chama, sikutaja mtu…nilizungumza ukweli wa yale maneno yalivyokuwa yamepangwa because ni information ambayo nilikuwa niko nayo.”

NCIC, while summoning the two leaders, warned that such reckless statements could plunge the country into political intolerance and in turn disrupt peace.

Sifuna on Monday apologised over insulting remarks he made against the Malindi MP saying they were unnecessarily graphic, adding that he did not intend to advocate for sexual violence.

“I want the people who know me to understand that this is not what Sifuna is about and definitely this is not what the ODM party is about. My remarks were unnecessarily graphic… I would never advocate for sexual violence. It is the worst form of violence against anyone even in political competition,” he said.

“Those words are regrettable and I hope the people who know that is not the person I am about will understand and appreciate the apology I have just given.”

In the addition to the apology, the ODM Secretary General, who is also a lawyer, offered to undertake 50 hours of pro-bono legal services to victims of gender-based violence in 2021.

Sifuna made the hateful utterances on December 11, during by-election campaigns in Msambweni, Kwale County.
