Mama Lucy Kibaki’s final journey

The body of the late former First Lady Mama Lucy Kibaki  is now being ferried to Othaya, Nyeri county for burial.

The convoy transporting the body of Mama Lucy left Lee Funeral Home at around 7:30, before heading to Muthaiga for a brief stopover.

Close family and friends were allowed into the home.

The cortege is using the Nairobi-Karatina-Mukurweini-Othaya Road, as it heads to the Othaya Approved School grounds in Nyeri for mass before final rites.

Lucy Muthoni Kibaki was born in Mukurwe-ini, Nyeri County. She is the wife to Kenya’s third President Mwai Kibaki who retired in 2013

She was a daughter to the late Rev. John Kagai and Rose Nyachomba. She was educated at Alliance Girls High School, and later trained as a teacher. Mama Lucy worked at a teacher-training college in Kiambu where she rose to the post of principal . She met Mwai Kibaki in 1960 and the couple got married in 1962.

Lucy’s last formal employment was as Principal of Kiambu Teachers Training College before retiring to take care of her family.

On 22 March 2016, Mama Lucy was flown out to London for specialized treatment.

On 26 April 2016, via a formal communiqué from State House Nairobi, the President informed the nation of her demise.

The former First Lady’s daughter Judy and son Anthony were at her bedside when she died at about 4 a.m.

Mama Lucy Kibaki died at the age of 82.
