Mama Lucy treated me like one of her children – Kibaki’s Aide de Camp

Former President Mwai Kibaki’s Aide de Camp Geoffrey King’ang’i Muturi has recalled his time working at State House and his interaction with the late former First Lady Mama Lucy Kibaki.

Muturi termed Mama Lucy as kind and amiable saying his relation with her was cordial

“I am very grateful to the former First Lady Mama Lucy Kibaki for taking me in as part of her family and treating me with utmost courtesy,” said King’ang’i.

The National Cereals and Produce Board chairman further recalled the inauguration of the Constitution in 2010 as the most memorable event in his time as former President Kibaki’s Aide de Camp since he got the honour to dress the then President and former First Lady with medals.

“It was the first time for Cabinet Ministers to wear their medals and most of them did not understand how to wear them. I was extremely honoured to dress the President and the First Lady with the medals,” he said.

Mama Lucy Kibaki was pronounced dead Tuesday morning while undergoing treatment at a London Hospital.

Mama Lucy Kibaki was reportedly flown to London last week for further treatment after having been in the hospital for about a month due to the deterioration of her health.

She was rushed to Gertrude’s Hospital last month before being moved to Nairobi Hospital where she was admitted at the Intensive Care Unit.

Several political leaders including President Uhuru Kenyatta, Amani National Congress (ANC) Musalia Mudavadi, National Assembly Majority Leader Aden Duale, Ford Kenya party leader Moses Wetangula, Senate Deputy Majority Leader Kipchumba Murkomen, Kakamega Senator Bonny Khalwale and Nairobi Senator Mike Sonko have sent their messages of condolences to former President Mwai Kibaki and his family following the demise of Mama Lucy Tuesday morning.

In his statement to media houses, President Kenyatta said: “On behalf of all Kenyans and my Government I convey heartfelt condolences and encouragement to His Excellency Hon Mwai Kibaki, family and friends.”

“Her excellency has been unwell for the last one month and has been receiving treatment here in Kenya and subsequently in the United Kingdom.”

The president remembered Mama Lucy for her contribution in the development projects and her to improve the wellbeing of the ordinary Kenyans, with particular focus  on tackling HIV/AIDs.

Mudavadi on his part praised the former first lady for advocating for the rights of women and standing by her husband even during the most turbulent times of his presidency.
