Man, 28, charged with hacking KRA, stealing Ksh4 billion

A man has been arraigned in court and charged with electronic fraud.

It is alleged that on diverse date between 1st March 2015 and 1st March 2017, the accused, Alex Mutungi Mutuku, with others not before court fraudulently caused the loss of Ksh3.9 billion, the property of Kenya Revenue Authority by interfering with the functions of the said institution’s computer system.

The prosecution, however, objected to the accused being released on bail stating that the accused person is facing a serious offence and is a frequent traveller and there is a likelihood of him absconding once released.

The prosecution further added that despite having a pending case of a similar nature, the accused went ahead and committed a similar offence that he was charged with today (Tuesday).

Mr Mutuku, through his lawyer, has, however, said he is not a flight risk and he cannot abscond since the prosecution has his passport.

Milimani Chief Magistrate Francis Andayi will deliver his ruling on bail on 28th March.
