Man accused of defrauding MPs to remain in police custody

Wazir Benson Masubo Chacha, the man accused of defrauding Members of Parliament, will remain in police custody pending the determination of an application by the prosecution to have him denied bond and bail terms.

Chacha, alias Sabina Wanjiru Chege was arraigned before Milimani Chief Magistrate where he denied six counts among them conspiracy to defraud, obtaining registration by false pretense and impersonation.

The prosecution submitted that Chacha is a flight risk hence asked the court to deny him bail.

After a medical examination on the suspect, the prosecution told the court that the accused is fit to stand trial.

Chacha was charged with conspiracy to defraud public officers and the general public by registering a mobile number in the name of Murang’a County Woman Representative Sabina Chege. He is alleged to have committed the offence on March 3, 2018 at Update beauty shop in Nairobi jointly with others not before court.

Chacha is also facing another count of intent to defraud public officers and the public by knowingly and fraudulently obtaining the registration of a mobile number in the name of Sabina Chege.

He is alleged to have obtained Ksh.20,000 from former Gem MP Jakoyo Midiwo purporting that he was Sabina Chege.

In addition, the accused is said to have attempted to obtain Ksh.100,000 from Mr. Midiwo under the pretense that he was the Murang’a Woman Rep.

Chacha was arrested on April 1 in Tarime, Tanzania while allegedly trying to flee to the Democratic Republic of Congo after learning that he was being sought by police.
