Man allegedly commits suicide in Kitui after domestic dispute

A 35-year-old man is reported to have committed suicide in Kitui County.

According to witnesses, the man apparently fought with a 40-year-old Munanie Mwengi, who he was living with in Mwingi town.

Moments after, he is said to have left on his motorbike only to be discovered later, hanging on the roof of a store.

“He had warned me that he was going to commit suicide and I was informed later on that he went ahead and did it,” Mwengi said while recording a statement with the police.

While confirming the incident, Mwingi Police Deputy Sub-County commander Nicholas Mutua said that investigations are ongoing to ascertain the motive behind the incident.

The body of the deceased was taken to Mwingi Level IV Hospital mortuary.

This comes at the back drop of rising cases of suicides in the country especially among young men.

According to police reports, majority of suicide cases are of people below 30 years.

Among the documented cases, 20 of them are university students from across the country, reports from between 2014 and 2018 indicate.
