Man arrested for failing to take his children to school

A 48-year-old man from Nakuru County was on Wednesday February 7, arrested for failing to take his children to school.

Samwel Kago, a father of two, was arrested at his home in Pangani Estate after his wife reported his failure to take his children to school despite having the alleged ability to.

According to the man’s wife, Mrs Winnie Kago, his husband has been allegedly neglecting his duties forcing her to use the little she earns from doing odd jobs to feed the family and settle other bills.

Their firstborn son, who is 15-years-old, sat for his Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) exam in 2016 and is yet to join high school.

In addition, their five-year-old daughter who enrolled at a local nursery school last year, has also dropped out as the man has declined to pay her fees.

In his defence, Mr Kago, who works as a cook in a local school, admitted to have been receiving a salary of over ten thousand shillings but said that most of it goes to settling various debts he owes different people though he couldn’t explain the nature of debts.

Area chief George Ng’ang’a said that there have been many similar incidents in the informal settlements especially in Pangani and Lakeview Estates and several other people have been arrested.

This comes in the wake of a recent directive by Deputy President William Ruto to Provincial Administration and security agents to arrest and prosecute parents who fail to take their children to school.
