Man arrested in Nyeri over uninspected meat

A man was arrested in Nyeri town after police and public health officers found meat that had not been inspected inside a residential house.

The suspect identified as John Ndegwa is said to have stashed them inside three freezers.

During the raid on Tuesday, officers discovered the meat estimated to be from two carcasses hidden in small gunny bags.

According to Mr. Joseph Macharia, a public health office , preliminary findings ascertained that the meat had not been inspected and was therefore not safe for human consumption

Macharia said the manner in which the meat was handled and kept was unhealthy and illegal.

“We suspect that the meat may be from stolen cattle as there has been a rise in cases of livestock theft in the area,”  said Nyeri sub county police Commander Paul Kuria.

He added that some of the meat may have made its way into hotels and butcheries in Nyeri town.

Officers indicated that they are seeking a court order to destroy the meat as it is not fit for human consumption.
