Man arrested over claims of human trafficking in Mombasa

Police in Mombasa County on Thursday arrested a man suspected to be involved in a human trafficking syndicate at the coast region.

Likoni sub-County OCPD Willy Simba said the suspect, Robert Osando, was arrested at the Likoni ferry channel after security officials found him ferrying six aliens in a private car headed towards Lunga Lunga area, along the Kenya-Tanzania border.

Osando told Citizen Digital that the six aliens are Ethiopian nationals, adding that his officers are looking for the second person who is believed to be involved in the human trafficking syndicate in Kwale County.

He added that police have held the car with registration number KCA 783Y, which he said had been used to ferry the aliens.

The suspects have no travelling documents and are expected to be arraigned in court today (Friday) in a Mombasa court.

This comes months after 11 Somali nationals were arraigned in court and charged with being in the country illegally.

The aliens were arrested at Qabobey area within Garissa County by the Anti Terror Police Unit (ATPU) in a bush after their Toyota Probox broke down.

In January this year, police in Embu arrested 27 Ethiopian aliens from who were being ferried in three private cars to Nairobi on their way to South Africa.

The aliens were arrested following a tip off from members of the public.
