Police in Kirinyaga are investigating an incident where a middle-aged man was killed on Wednesday night at Barcho trading centre over an alleged Ksh.700 debt.

35-year old, Joseph Muthike from Mutitu village, is said to have failed to pay the amount he owed to a local money lending group.

A group of boda boda riders who are used to recover the group’s debts are linked to the killing.

According to local residents boda boda operators in the area run a Kangaroo court where defaulters are taken for questioning.

“There is an illegal group running a Kangaroo court in this area,” one resident said.

Ndia OCPD Sicily Gatiti confirmed the incident saying the man was badly beaten and succumbed to injuries on his way home.

“We found the body near St. Philip High School, preliminary investigations have revealed that he was beaten by unknown group and died on his way home,” Gatiti said.

Gatiti however, said she was not aware of any group running a Kangaroo court in the area.

She issued a warning saying if such a group existed then it will be dealt with the full force of the law.

“Let me tell you boda-boda operators, we only recognise legal businesses, if there is anyone running illegal business, they will be dealt with accordingly,” the officer said.

Gatiti urged local residents to report debt cases to the police and not illegal middle men who might be operating in the area.

“If you are claiming money from someone, follow the right procedure, tell the police or take the person to court, they will help you recover your money,” she said.
