Man behind MPs con game is mentally ill, court told

A Nairobi Court has ordered that the man accused of extorting money from Members of Parliament be detained for four days to allow for investigations to be completed.

Resident Magistrate Christine Njagi further directed that Waziri Benson Mazubo alias Waziri Chacha, 25, be taken to the Mathare Mental Hospital for evaluation and the report be presented before the court.

This was after Chacha’s advocate, Job Ngeresa told the court that the respondent has seeking treatment for mental illness.

“Your honor, I beseech the court that the respondent be taken for mental assessment. He has a brain tumor,” said Ngeresa.

Chief Inspector John Kiprop, who is heading the investigation, also asked for more time saying the respondent is also under investigation for obtaining money by posing as a public officer.

Chacha was arrested on Sunday morning in Tarime, Tanzania thanks to well-coordinated efforts between security teams of the two countries, DCI George Kinoti said.

The DCI indicated that Chacha was enroute to the Democratic Republic of Congo when he was seized but Chacha’s lawyer refuted the claim saying that his client had been on his way to get treatment at Mwibiri Hospital in Mwanza.

The case will be mentioned  on April 9.
