Man burns wife using petrol for getting home late

A family in Kiratina village, Nakuru County is seeking justice after their kin was set ablaze by her husband for allegedly getting home late on Saturday night.

25-year-old Lucy Nyira is nursing serious injuries at the Nakuru Level 5 Hospital following the incident.

She suffered 25% degree burns after her husband, in a fit of rage, allegedly doused her with petrol, set her ablaze and locked her up in the house for getting home at 7pm, which according to the husband was late.

Lucy had travelled to Nairobi on Friday to purchase goods for sale and went back on Saturday only for the unexpected to happen.

“Nilimpata amefunga mlango akaniambia leo utalala nje na saa hiyo nilikua nimempigia nikitoka nikamwambia kuna jam…juu manguo zilikua kwa neighbor….akanigonga kofi akanichapa. Mimi mafuta sijui ilikua wapi… akanimwagilia kwa macho….akachukua kiberiti akaniwasha,” said Lucy Nyira.

By the time the neighbours got wind of the situation, Lucy had suffered burns and was rushed to hospital.

She claims that her husband of 3 years, 24-year-old Bernard Kariha has been abusive before.

Doctors at the Nakuru Level 5 Hospital say that the patient suffered burns on the face, arms, legs and upper body but is out of danger.

Nakuru County Police Commander Stephen Matu says the suspect is in police custody pending  investigations with Lucy’s family hopeful that justice will prevail.
