Man causes stir in court over defilement case

A 23-year old man caused a stir in court in Embu County on Wednesday when he refused to pay Ksh300,000 as bond to secure his release after being charged with attempting to defile an 11-year old girl.

John Mukundi Kiura, appearing before Chief Magistrate Albert Gicheru, wondered why he was going to jail yet he had not defiled the girl he was accused of defiling.

Mukundi claimed that the girl and his brother started running once they spotted him because he was ‘dirty’, explaining that he works as a boda-boda loader in Embu market.

This prompted the prosecution to seek a court order for the accused’s mental assessment.

Mukundi had been charged that on October 28 at Iveche Village in Embu he attempted to defile the 11-year-old girl.

On the second count, he was charged with indecent act to the girl by touching her with his genitals on her private parts. He pleaded not guilty to both charges.

The case will be mentioned on November 14, 2016.
