Man charged for stealing ‘free’ newspapers
A man has been arraigned in court and charged for stealing free newspapers.
It is alleged that on July 8th, 2015, along Uhuru Highway-Haile Selassie roundabout in Nairobi, James Ngugi Ng’ang’a stole 24 copies of The People Daily claimed to be valued at Ksh 2,400.
Ngugi, who used to be a cart pusher, pleaded guilty to the charges before Milimani Chief Magistrate Daniel Ogembo saying he was forced to steal and sell the papers so that he may get some money.
The accused further stated that he had no way of earning a living since he was incapacitated after he was knocked down by a motorbike a while back.
He added that since the free papers do not reach people in Mathurwa, he thought it was a good idea to sell the papers to them at Ksh 10, a price he said they could afford.
The magistrate ordered probation officers to further investigate Ngugi’s characters and file a report before the court on July 15th when the case will be mentioned.
