Man charged with theft over Ksh.39K sent on MPesa by mistake

A man was arraigned at the Makadara Law Courts and charged with theft after he allegedly withdrew money that was sent to his MPesa account by mistake.

According to the charge sheet, Stanley Irungu stole Ksh. 39,000 wrongly sent to his phone number.

The court document further states that the money was the property of Milicent Atieno.

The incident is alleged to have taken place on June 22 this year at Umoja estate in Nairobi.

Reports indicate that the accused allegedly received a total of Ksh.60,000.

On Thursday, Atieno told the court that when she called Safaricom to help her reverse the money, they told her that he only had a balance of Ksh. 21,000.

She further claimed that several calls to Irungu went unanswered.

Irungu was released on Ksh.20,000 cash bail after admitting that he withdrew the money but was willing to refund it.

The case will be mentioned on October 1, 2019.
