Man kills wife, commits suicide after argument with mother-in-law

A 21-year-old man on Friday evening committed suicide after killing his wife at Ober village in Ndhiwa constituency, Homa Bay County, over an alleged domestic brawl.

Paul Ochieng Owiti reportedly killed his wife, 18-year-old Beryl Atieno, after a disagreement with his mother-in-law who reportedly disapproved of their union.

Confirming the incident, Kobita location Chief Mark Ongoro said the two had stayed together for about 10 months but the woman’s mother wanted her to leave Mr. Owiti and go back home to proceed with her secondary education.

The administrator added that the woman had come back to pick her clothes and other personal belongings when a quarrel ensued between the couple.

According to Mr. Ongoro, when Paul realized that his wife was back home, he sneaked to a nearby trading center and bought a rope and poison.

Upon reaching home, he allegedly locked the door and repeatedly beat the woman using a piece of wood fatally injuring her.

He then reportedly consumed poison and hang himself but was rescued by neighbours who heard commotion in the house and rushed him to Pala Health Center where he died while receiving treatment.

Bodies of the deceased were transferred to Homa Bay County Teaching and Referral mortuary as investigations continue.
