Nyeri: Man jailed for failing to pay Ksh.9M after losing election petition

A man was on Monday committed to 30 days in civil jail after failing to raise Ksh.9.5 million as ordered by the court following an unsuccessful petition against the election of Mathira Member of Parliament (MP) Rigathi Gachagua.

According to court documents, Michael Gichuru neither obeyed the decree nor satisfied the court that he is entitled to be discharged from custody.

The court further fixed Ksh.1,800 as the rate of the monthly allowance for the subsistence of the petitioner.

Mr. Gachagua emerged victor against Wambura Wamaranga in the race for the Mathira parliamentary seat in the August 8, 2017 election.

Mr. Gichuru, however, challenged the election in court but his petition was dismissed during a ruling delivered in June, 2018.
