Man critically injured in fresh Pokot- Marakwet clashes

A middle-aged man has been admitted at Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital following fresh clashes between the Pokot and Marakwet communities.

The man, identified as Samuel Cheboimo, was shot in the mouth during the raid that happened on October 29 in Mogil village.

“One of our own has sustained a gunshot to his mouth. He cannot even speak because his tongue fell out. Now what do we do?” said one villager.

The victim’s family says raiders stole 52 head cattle from their homestead and over 140 others from their neighbors.

Explaining why police were unable to apprehend the attackers, Marakwet East security boss, Eric Mlevu, said the raiders had used a route that was not manned by officers.

“The raiders used a different route, there were no police stationed on that route and that is why they were able to go in and out unnoticed,” said Mlevu.

The villagers complained that officers are unfamiliar with the terrain – a factor that they claimed raiders were taking advantage off.

The raid comes a day after the Deputy President William Ruto was in the area, and urged the arrest of the Pokot raiders.
